Soft starters for asynchronous motors

These soft starters are usefull to reduce the start current on asynchronous motors connected to a stand alone grid with limited capacity - e.g. where the power is supplied from a genset.

The start current on asynchronous motors are typically 2-3 times the nominal current, so starting a motor can easily exceed the nominal current from the genset, and make the automatic fuse disconnect the load, and/or cause large fluctations in the voltage in the grid.

The 3 phase soft starter on this page regulates the voltage on 2 phases, thus limiting current on all 3 phases.
